Sweet Denise.

Today is a big day.

32 years ago today, give or take, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman named Sweet Denise was born.

Now Sweet Denise grew up as a Southern Baptist preacher’s daughter trapped among three crazy brothers. Her parents’ East Texas accents rubbed off on her.

She’s the definition of sassy Southern charm. Her “potat-eh” {potato} salad kills. She can fix any rip in your jeans. And she knows the Bible like the back of her hand.

But don’t be fooled, you can’t mess with Sweet Denise because she dishes out witty comebacks like nobody’s business.

Sweet Denise is simply amazing.

She also happens to be my mama.

It isn’t everyday you find a mother, best friend, advice-giver, joker, seamstress, cook, back scratcher and confidant all in one.

That is why today is such a huge day. Because Sweet Denise is the total package.

You think I’m joking, but I’m not. This is not simply a kind post from a daughter about her loving mother.

This is a call to action.

Find your own Sweet Denise.*

Because mine is taken.

But really, we all need role models.

We need someone to look at and say,

“Hey. I want to be like you.”

While we can’t forget our ultimate role model is Jesus Christ, we can find people who reflect him in our everyday lives and aspire to be like them.

Find someone older–not old, Sweet Denise will confirm that she is not old.

Find someone wiser.

Find someone who can be a listener, encourager and Truth-speaker.

Find someone who will call you out when you’re wandering and congratulate you when you’re steady.

Find someone who will weep beside you when your heart is broken, someone who will rejoice with you when it overflows.

Find someone who desires to know you deeply, fully and promises to love you despite yourself.

Find someone who gives plenty of grace and offers almost too much love.

Find someone who is all of this and doesn’t even realize it.

Find someone who is all of this and pretends she’s not.

Dear Sweet Denise,

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all of my prayers for you, I always pray with joy {1 Philippians 1}.

Praise The Lord that He brought you to this earth 32ish years ago.

Praise The Lord that He brought me to you 20 years ago.

Praise The Lord that He made you just the way you are, and designed your life just the way it is. Praise The Lord you are alive and well, because this earth would be much less fun and full of light without you.

I love you, Mama.

Happy birthday from your favorite/only daughter,

Mae Mae

P.S. Please don’t kill me for posting this. Remember grace. OK, that’s all. I love you. Bye.

*If you already have a Sweet Denise in your life, go ahead and send them a link to this post. And thank them. Thank them a lot.

Sweet Denise is really getting a hang of the selfie thing.
