Modern Day Moses: On Confidence in Our Calling

Sometimes I forget God knows what He is doing.

I feel weak. I question how I am chosen by God. Because I fear that I’m just not good at this whole faith thing and I know I doubt more than I should.

God, you’re asking me to do what? You’re telling me to give up that? You’re calling me to go where? Huh?

Well Moses felt a lot of what I am feeling.

In Exodus 3, God tells Moses that He is concerned about the Israelites’ suffering. He calls Moses to bring His People, the Israelites, out of Egypt and to lead them to the land flowing with milk and honey.

But Moses says, “”Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'” {v. 11}

He deems himself unfit for such a mission. Later on, in chapter 4, he says he is unworthy, he lacks authority, and he is slow of speech and tongue. Obviously, God picked the wrong guy.

Just kidding.

God is God. God knows who He picks, why He picks them and what He will do through them.

I am so happy I was called back to Champion Forest Baptist Church, where I get to serve alongside these crazy goofs.

In response to Moses’ doubt, God says, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.” {Exodus 3:12}

Firstly, God is with Moses. Every step of the way. And, as Romans 8:31 puts it, if God is with us, who can be against us? How can we worry when God’s presence is more than enough?

Secondly, God promises a sign. But here is the trick: God doesn’t promise Moses a sign before the mission. Moses has to bring the Israelites out of Egypt, then the sign is presented.

After Moses fulfills his duty, he will fully understand why God called him.

He will look back and say, “Wow. God was with me. He helped us escape from the Egyptians. He sent the plagues. He parted the seas. And God used me. God was right when He picked me, after all. Whoa.”

And Moses and the Israelites will return to Horeb, the mountain where God first appeared to Moses in the burning bush, and they will praise God for rescuing them.

I am Moses. I feel insufficient and awkward. But God was with Moses, and God is with me. And whatever calling I am fulfilling, I can know that I will worship God once it is complete. Even better, I can worship Him in the journey.

Because God calls me, God knows my strengths and weaknesses and why He calls me, and God knows what He will do through me.

I may not know how I am chosen. I may not feel like I am making much of a difference. And I may want to call it quits some days. But I don’t have to know, because God knows, and I have faith that one day I will know too.

Praise God, for He knows exactly what He is doing.
